One of the big differences between Apple and Android is that if you want to make your app available on an iPhone you have to put it on the Apple Store, whereas there are alternatives to the Google Play Store for those who wish to use them (such as F-Droid).
Google have now decided to close this option and make all Android developers pay to register to be able to write apps that other people can install on their phones and tablets.
