Dear Wael Sawan (CEO of Shell),
We the undersigned are expressing our outrage at your multimillion dollar lawsuit against Greenpeace.
The Greenpeace activists you are suing were carrying out a peaceful protest. Your attempt to intimidate them for exercising their protected right to free expression is outrageous and frankly dangerous.
The activists were demanding that Shell stop drilling new oil and gas because it will only fuel more disaster weather events around the world and to pay compensation to the countries already facing the brunt of the crisis. They were compelled to do this because they’ve seen the direction the company has taken since you’ve become CEO - abandoning plans to cut fossil fuel production, slashing investment in renewables, and continuing to explore for new oil and gas.
You are worsening the climate crisis and are now trying to intimidate anyone who holds you to account. Therefore, we express our dismay at your intimidation lawsuit against Greenpeace and call on you to stop drilling new fossil fuels and start paying compensation to the countries most impacted by the climate crisis that you have helped create!
